Draft Hobart Railyards Urban Design Strategy

The Hobart Railyards is about to undergo a major redevelopment.
After many years as an industrial site and transport depot, the Railyards will be reunited with the city and Sullivans Cove. It promises to be a complex and challenging task.
To make it happen, the Sullivans Cove Waterfront Authority has taken the first step: urban design and strategic planning for the site.
The Tasmanian Government has named the Railyards as the preferred site for a redeveloped Royal Hobart Hospital. The New Royal Project of the Department of Health and Human Services is undertaking a parallel but separate process to master plan, design and construct a new hospital.
The Authority believes a major institutional project such as a hospital has the potential to underpin redevelopment of the Railyards and kick start complementary development in the area.
The Draft Hobart Railyards Urban Design Strategy was on exhibition with an invitation to all members of the community to have their say. The four-week comment period closed on Monday 11 August 2008. All comments will be collated by the Authority and will inform the final Hobart Railyards Urban Design Strategy.
The documents that were on exhibition remain available below for download.
Next Steps
Once the Hobart Railyards Urban Design Strategy is finalised the Authority will consider the most appropriate method of developing statutory controls for the site.
The New Royal Project of the Department of Health and Human Services is developing a detailed master plan between July–December 2008 including a hospital business case for consideration by Cabinet.
The Railyards and intermodal transport hub will need to be removed and the site remediated before construction can begin on the site. At the earliest this may be from mid-2010 onwards.
The Hobart Railyards could become the largest urban renewal project in Tasmania – an exciting challenge.
