Background

The Sullivans Cove Waterfront Authority and Tasports are working together to better manage Franklin Wharf as part of the working port and as an important public space.
Franklin Wharf is the location of events, such as yacht race finish festivities and the Wooden Boat Festival, and connects a string of year-round attractions, including ferries and restaurants along its length.
It also plays an important role in linking both sides of Sullivans Cove. Improving this connection and the qualities of the Wharf as a public space were recognised in the Hobart Waterfront Urban Design Framework 2004.
This increasing activity needs to be managed to balance the needs of users of the Wharf, and to provide a safe and attractive environment for pedestrians and cyclists without unnecessary impact on the port operations.
Release of Consultation Document: Managing Franklin Wharf as a Shared Space
The consultation document Managing Franklin Wharf as a Shared Space was released on 23 February 2009 for public comment. This document, plus an information sheet and feedback form can be downloaded below as PDF files.
A public exhibition of the document is being held at the Authority office at 5 Franklin Wharf, Hobart. The exhibition opened 23 February and remains available for viewing until further notice. The offices are open to the public between 10am and 4pm, Monday to Friday, and at other times by appointment.
Feedback about the key responses and key moves outlined in the document were invited from all members of the public. The feedback will be used in the preparation of the Management Plan for Franklin Wharf. Submissions in response to the Consultation Document closed on 1 April 2009.

Next Steps
The Authority will report on the feedback received and consider the comments as part of developing the Franklin Wharf Management Plan.
While some key responses can be accommodated in the day-to-day or seasonal maintenance carried out by Tasports, others may occur over a longer period of time and require capital investment.
Most key responses will need to be developed in more detail. As part of this process, there will be further consultation with those directly affected.
Normal planning processes will still apply for any changes which are of a scale and nature that require a planning permit.
